Multi Tiered Web Architectures

Modern Internet Systems use multi-tiered Web architectures to provide the required level of scalability and reliability. While some Web applications use two tiers—Web servers and database servers—high volume sites typically add a third tier: application servers.

Web Servers

On the front line of your Web site are the Web servers that act as the presentation layer. Web servers dynamically format content as HTML to be displayed by Web browsers or in formats suitable for users accessing your site through other devices, such as Personal Digital Assistants (PDA) or cell phones. Your Web site may utilize several to dozens of Web servers so that it can accommodate sudden increases in traffic and offer 24x7 uninterrupted service to your customers.

Application Servers

All the business logic for your Web site resides in the application server tier. Application servers receive requests from Web servers, look up information in databases and process the requests. The processed information is then passed back to the Web servers where it is formatted and displayed. WaterWare has experience with the latest products of all the major application vendors: Sun Microsystems, BEA and IBM.

Database Servers

The Relational Database Management System (RDBMS) is the storehouse of your Web site's information. Everything from user information and catalogs to reports and customer orders are stored in databases. WaterWare has experience with all major database products: Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, Sybase, Informix and DB2.
